Neck lift surgery may be performed with local anesthesia for a limited necklift or IV sedation anesthesia for a full neck lift. In sedation anesthesia, IV medication is given that allows the patient to breathe on their own yet feel nothing. Depending on the aesthetic needs of the patient, Dr. Sanders performs liposuction to remove excess fat, platysmaplasty to remove and tighten the underlying neck muscles, and removal of excess skin. While some neck lift patients require only skin tightening, others need a combination of all three procedures to achieve their ideal outcomes. As a result, time in surgery varies from one to several hours.

In a neck lift, incisions are made under the sideburn, along the edge of the front of the ear, and then behind the ear and into the hair. If only a limited necklift is performed, the muscle will be tightened from the side, avoiding the need for an incision under the chin and the need for drainage tubes. If there are noticeable muscle bands in front of the neck, however, those are usually sutured together by means of an incision beneath the chin.

To accomplish this, the skin must be lifted off of the front of the neck and this usually requires the use of drainage tubes after surgery. A light head dressing is applied after surgery and this is removed, along with the drains, after several days. An elastic bandage is then worn for about a week.

Dr. Sanders’ reputation is such that it attracts neck lift patients from throughout the greater Los Angeles area. In the paragraphs below, Dr. Sanders explains the neck lift procedure and the results this treatment helps achieve.

Neck Lift: Is It for Me?

Neck lift is a surgical procedure that helps reduce or eliminate band lines, excess skin and fatty tissue deposits from the neck area. This surgical treatment also tightens skin of the neck, creating a beautifully contoured, youthful neckline. This may involve tightening loose muscle, removal of excess fat and/or skin, or a combination of these procedures.

Good Candidates for a Neck Lift

A person is usually considered a good candidate for a neck lift if he or she:

  • Is in good health
  • Has loose and/or sagging skin of the neck and jowl
  • Has a double chin or excess fat under the chin
  • Has vertical lines, or bands, on the neck

What Patients Are Saying About Us

Recovering from Neck Lift Surgery

Immediately following neck lift surgery, you may experience mild to moderate discomfort, which can be alleviated with doctor-prescribed medication, if needed. You will need to wear the compression bandages that the doctor applied for another one or two weeks. Bruising and swelling is normal during this time, and typically subsides within two weeks. To help reduce swelling, sleep with your head elevated with a couple of pillows for one to two weeks. Rest as much as possible for the first 10-14 days. After this, you may return to normal activities such as work, driving and light exercise. Most patients look quite normal by two weeks.
