Recovery is one of the most talked-about topics in a facelift consultation with Dr. George Sanders. Patients usually have a vague idea that they will be “out of commission” for a few weeks but understandably want more details about the healing period. Dr. Sanders thought it would be helpful to compile common facelift recovery questions into a blog post.
How long is facelift recovery?
Every patient recovers at his or her own pace, but most start feeling “back to normal” about two to three weeks after surgery.
When can I shower after surgery?
During your consultation, ask Dr. Sanders about showering after surgery. In the majority of cases, patients can shower the day after surgery but must avoid getting water on the face.
How soon are the stitches removed?
Dr. Sanders uses dissolvable stitches that do not require removal.
When can I resume exercise?
Two weeks are generally required before resuming exercise.
When can I go out in public?
Most people are ready to go out in public and return to work around the two-week mark after surgery. By this time, most of the swelling, bruising and discomfort have subsided and the face has improved significantly.
Will I have swelling?
Swelling is normal during facelift recovery. To reduce swelling, keep your head elevated, even when sleeping. Use cold compresses for the first two weeks after surgery. Keep salt/sodium intake to a minimum. Prescription medications as well as certain herbal meds are also of help.
Will I have scarring?
Any incision leaves a scar, but Dr. Sanders makes the incisions carefully to prevent noticeable facial scarring. They are placed inconspicuously and created in such a way that they are nearly imperceptible after healing.
